Introduction

Meerkatgat Lodge is situated in the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate which covers 650 ha. A futher 1600 ha adjoining the development forms part of the greater Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, where gamedrives can be done.

 

GAME VIEWING ACTIVITIES

Hoedspruit is in the centre of big 5 areas. Kruger national Park Orpen Gate and Phalaborwa Gate are respectively 71 Km and 74Km away. The fence between Kruger National Park, Sabie Sands Game Reserve, Timbavati Game Reserve, Klaserie Game Reserve and Manyeleti Game Reserve has been taken away for a number of years now. The new Giyarondo gate between Kruger National Park and the Trans Frontier Park in Mozambique will make access into Mozambique coastline much easier and shorter in traveling time. Construction of this gate is currently in progress. Activities in the Hoedsrpuit area are the following:

* Hoedspruit Cheetah breeding project, 18 Km.

*  Mholoholo Rahabilitation Centre at Kampersrus, 28 Km.

* Swadini Snake park, 16 Km.

* Timbavati and Klaserie Game Reserve about 20 Km.

* The world famous Thornybush Game Reserve, 25 Km.

In these areas one can book organized game drives on open safari vehicles or for the more adventurous, walking trails in the big 5 country can be undertaken with professional specialist guides.

* Three Rondavels Blyde Canyons, which is the third largest canyons in the world after grand canyon in America and Fish River canyon in Namibia. The Blyde Canyon is the only green canyon in the world.

* Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window, World's View, The Pinnacle, Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls and the Graskop Gorge - 140 Km.

* Good places to eat here is Sleeper's Restaurant at the railway station. Particularly worth a stop on the road to the Blyde Canyon (just before the Tzaneen turning) is the Mad Dogz Cafe. For breakfast with a twist, or a good place to finish off the day, the Trading Post is 10 Km or so closer to town along the same road.

ACCESSABILITY

* Eastgate Airport at Hoedspruit received their international license in February 2004. In the near future international overseas flights will fly direct to Eastgate Airport once upgrading to the buildings has been completed. Limpopo Development Corporation has earmarked R370 million for the project.

* SA Airlink has three scheduled flights daily to Hoedspruit, two are return flights from Johannesburg International Airport and one is from Cape Town International Airport via Sun City.

* Phalaborwa, which is 75 Km away, boasts an airport that has 5 daily flights from Johannesburg International Airport.

* Once Giyaronde Gate (the new border gate), which is situated North East of Letaba Rest Camp, is opened between Kruger National Park and the Trans Frontier Park in Mozambique, the East coast resorts of Mozambique between Maputo & Xai-Xai is a mere two hours drive from the gate.

* * Further north to the province of Inhambane, Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Islands is a mere four hours drive from the gate.
